Bad Credit and Credit Cards

You might think this subject is dead and that you have read everything regarding this topic; however this topic is more important to the current state of the economy in the UK than it was five or even two years ago.  The credit crunch in the UK started as a result of the US subprime market crashing.  It has affected the world actually.  With the debt for UK residents rising more and more, individuals are going to need credit cards even those with bad credit.

Those with bad credit will find that they are unable to get a reasonable credit card offer.  In some cases you might even find that there are no credit cards at your disposal except for the prepaid cards mentioned in an earlier article.  Bad credit is a risk for companies.  If they decide to offer you a line of credit generally that means you have a very high interest rate.  There are things to combat this issue.

  • When you have bad credit access your credit report.  By accessing the same report the credit card company is going to look at you are able to see what on that list is older than five years.  Anything in the UK that is on your report that is older than five years can be removed, except bankruptcies and occasionally credit arrears.  When you petition the reporting agency to remove these items from your report your score will increase.
  • Anything that is still in arrears and has not been settled needs to be fixed.  If getting a new credit card will help with this than you should do so.  The point is if there is anything on the credit report that you can have taken off or pay off to close the account, you should.  This will allow the credit score you have to increase over the next month or so, which means you would be in a better position to get the credit card of your choice.
  • In the event that you still can’t increase your credit score to get a better credit card you should apply for the bad credit credit cards.  These cards will allow you to improve the credit score over time as long as you use the card appropriately.  This means you payoff any balance on time and every month.  If you leave a balance you will get charged a very high interest rate.  In fact most bad credit credit cards start out at 29 percent interest and can go as high as 54 percent interest rate.  As you can imagine this would make a bad situation worse.

Bad credit credit cards can be used to help you increase your credit score and get your life back on track, but how do you find these cards?  There are government websites like www.direct.gov.uk to help you to determine what you should be looking for in a credit card or financial situation.  By going to these sites you can learn how to get your credit back on track and get the right credit cards.
